Affective Canines helps people when their dog’s behavior has become a serious problem.
We don't offer normal dog training. Instead, we specialize in behavior rehabilitation. This means we fix issues like severe aggression, reactivity, and other extreme behavior issues.
We offer a program called The Affective Canine™,(/the-affective-canine) built specifically for these dogs who have not been able to find help elsewhere. Your dog lives with us for a few short weeks while we handle the behavior issue for you.
Our goal is simple: to help dogs and owners who feel like they have nowhere else to go.
We’re based in Richmond, Virginia and work with dogs throughout the entire state of Virginia. If you have a dog in Virginia with serious behavior issues, you’re in the right place.
If you’re outside of Virginia and feel like this is what your dog needs, you’re more than welcome to apply. Dogs who need this level of rehabilitation shouldn’t go without help because of location alone.
We offer behavior rehabilitation for dogs with serious issues.
Our program, The Affective Canine™, is where your dog stays with us for 4-8 weeks while we handle the behavior work directly, every day.
It’s designed for dogs dealing with extreme aggression, reactivity, or other complex behavior problems that haven't been resolved anywhere else.
Our program investment is $10,000.
This is designed to resolve their complex behavior issues properly, so you’re not dealing with it for the next 5-10+ years of your dog’s life. We only take on a very small number of dogs at a time, so everything is tailored to your specific dog and the level of work required.
We do offer payment options for those who need flexibility, and we can walk you through what that will look like.
See The Affective Canine™ (/the-affective-canine)for more details.
That’s exactly the kind of case we specialize in.
Many of the dogs we've worked with in the past had a bite history already, or other behavior that was unsafe.
That’s exactly why we exist: to fully rehab those kinds of issues, so both you and your dog get your life back together. Your dog is not too far gone.
The next step is to apply for a placement. We’ll take a look at your dog’s situation and let you know if we're the right fit.

FAQ: Do you cover shelter or rescue dogs with an unknown history?
Short answer: of course we do. As long as we have capacity, we will take on any dog we can, including any kind of dog with unknown or traumatic histories. Those are often the dogs we love working with most. They’re typically the most misunderstood, the most challenging, and the ones who need real help, not another curriculum-based dog training package. Some rescue dogs may need immediate, hands-on intervention before we’re able to give them long-term coverage, depending on t

Mini-Article: How Canine Coverage Helps Reduce Dog Euthanasia Rates
The dog world has a problem no one wants to talk about: Dogs are being euthanized for behavior issues that are completely preventable and trainable. These dogs aren't “broken.” And it's not like people don't care. This is because the entire industry is built backward, offering help only when things are already dangerous, overwhelming, or expensive. Let’s be blunt. A dog starts showing early signs of fear, reactivity, guarding, or stress. The owner tries to figure it out alon
