How This Case Started
When Tanner first came to Affective Canines, his family was running out of options.
Tanner, a 2.5 year old Cockapoo, had quickly developed a serious habit of resource guarding and aggression. What began as concerning behavior had escalated into repeated bites directed toward everyone in his family, the very people who loved him most. Everyday situations that most families take for granted had become sources of extreme stress, uncertainty, and fear.
One of the causes of Tanner’s aggression involved anything around being physically handled or picked up. His family members naturally and understandably found themselves constantly managing his environment and avoiding situations that could provoke an aggressive response. As his behavior worsened over a few short months, his family were quickly running out of ideas and options as how to help their dog.
Despite the challenges in having a dog with severe behavioral problems, Tanner's family was committed to finding a solution. They believed there was a good dog underneath the aggression and resource guarding, and they sought out rehabilitation with Affective Canines before his situation became even more severe.
When Tanner got started with us, our goal was not simply to suppress his unwanted behavior. Our goal was to address the emotional factors contributing to his aggression, improve his quality of life, and help him develop healthier responses to the situations he found difficult.
Our Behavior Rehabilitation Approach
Our approach with Tanner focused on truly rehabilitating, therefore getting rid of, his resource guarding and aggressive behaviors, rather than simply “managing” his problems or avoiding his “triggers”, which we believe only contains and avoids the problem, not solve it.
Our initial priority was allowing Tanner to decompress in his new environment and get settled in. From there, Tanner was able to grow increasingly comfortable, trust us, and from there show his true colors, i.e. his severe behavioral problems.
Throughout his rehabilitation process, we focused heavily on waking up Tanner’s rather dormant play instincts, which is an all too common problem in the pet dog population. But in turn, waking up that side of Tanner would heavily build his much-needed confidence, emotional fulfillment, relationship-building, and help develop a consistent positive daily outlet. Rather than viewing Tanner's behavior problems as any sort of disobedience or misbehavior, we simply approached it as information about his current emotional state, learning history, and unmet needs.
As Tanner developed stronger stress resilience and a clearer understanding of how to successfully navigate everyday situations, we gradually exposed him to the scenarios that had historically triggered his resource guarding and aggressive behaviors. These exposures were conducted strategically and at a pace that allowed Tanner to remain as successful as possible, while learning new positive responses to previous struggles.
A lot of attention was put on handling exercises/tactile stimulation and situations involving physical interaction, because being picked up and manipulated had become significant reasons for his aggression. Through clearly defined leadership, previously built trust, and a vast amount of positive experiences, Tanner learned that these interactions like cleaning his ears, brushing his teeth, wiping his feet, etc. no longer needed to be met with defensive or aggressive behavior.
Over time, these new habits, emotional states, and prosocial behaviors replaced his old behavior issues. The goal was not simply to prevent his aggression or bites, but to help Tanner become a dog who no longer felt the need to use aggression in the first place.
By the end of his rehabilitation, Tanner was able to safely participate in everyday family life with significantly improved emotional fulfillment, confidence in himself, and socially acceptable behavior.
Case Outcome
By the end of Tanner's rehabilitation with us, the resource guarding and aggression issues that had once dominated his relationship with his family and defined who he was were no longer existent. The version of Tanner who had previously been biting the people closest to him was now able to safely, happily, and confidently participate in everyday life.
Tanner showed a huge improvement in his emotional stability, courageousness, handling tolerance, and overall quality of life. He was able to engage in rough play, affection, handling, and routine household interactions without the defensive responses that had previously become a large part of his personality.
Most importantly, Tanner's progress was not limited to simply his rehabilitation environment. When he returned home after around 4 weeks, his family was able to successfully perform the same tasks and everyday scenarios that Tanner had learned throughout the program. The new behaviors and skills that Tanner learned during his rehabilitation transferred back into his home environment, where the problems had originated from, allowing his family to confidently live with and enjoy their dog once again.
Today, Tanner is a very playful, affectionate, and emotionally fulfilled dog whose life is no longer defined by his worst behavioral problems. His story serves as a reminder that severe behavioral issues do not always have to determine a dog's future, and that true change is possible when you understand that dogs can change for the better.
Dealing with a similar issue?
If your dog’s behavior is becoming harder to manage, predict, or safely live with, this may be the level of intervention they need.
We only take on a limited number of severe cases at a time to provide the fully immersive behavioral rehabilitation they deserve. One that's focused on lasting change, not temporary fixes.
