Case Duration

3 months of daily, in-shelter behavioral intervention

Age at Intake

2-3 years old

How This Case Started

Prince was found tied to a fire hydrant overnight in 30-degree weather, before being brought into the shelter. From day one, he displayed serious aggression toward everyone he came in contact with. While we never knew the full details of his past, the circumstances surrounding how he was abandoned strongly suggested he had likely experienced significant stress, neglect, or mistreatment before being abandoned at the shelter.

Rather than removing him from the environment, we worked with him directly in the shelter through daily, structured behavioral intervention focused on rebuilding trust in humans and emotional control. Over time, Prince transformed into a playful, social dog who no longer displayed any aggression, even the ones he previously displayed it toward.

Our Behavioral Intervention Approach

For three months, we worked with Prince inside the Humane Society on a near-daily basis, focusing entirely on rebuilding emotional fulfillment, trust, and safe & playful interactions with people. Early on, his aggression and defensive behavior made interaction difficult, if not impossible, but over time he began opening up through structured play and controlled social engagement.

As his stress levels decreased and his trust in people increased, Prince became more and more positively responsive, engaged, and socially stable. He eventually learned how to interact and cooperate with both us and all of the staff, could safely navigate new human interactions without displaying aggression, and was able to move through his environment with zero fear that he'd bite anyone.

Most importantly, the intervention changed his perception of people. Much of his aggression appeared rooted in trauma, fear, conflict, and a learned expectation that humans were unsafe. By consistently showing him predictability, clarity, and positive engagement over time, we were able to replace that defensive state to a place where he trusts people again.

Case Outcome

By the end of the intervention, Prince had transformed from a highly defensive and severely aggressive shelter dog into a social and playful dog. He's able to safely interact with staff, playfully meet new people without displaying any aggression, and enthusiastically engage in play with anyone he meets.

Most importantly, Prince no longer moves through the world expecting conflict from people. He developed trust and confidence in people, allowing him to safely experience life in a way he likely has never had before.
