Affective Canines specializes in rehabilitating Military Working Dogs, Police K9s, and other working dogs struggling with serious behavior problems that prevent them from safely retiring. Founded by two former Military Working Dog handlers, we understand the challenges these dogs face and the retirement they've earned after years of service. ​​Our mission is to create a future where no Military Working Dog or Police K9 loses their life after years of service simply because they're struggling with behavior problems.

We work with Military Working Dogs, Police K9s, and other working dogs whose serious behavior problems put their chance at a peaceful retirement, or their life, at risk. Each dog lives with us for as long as it takes in order to work directly on the problems that prevent them from safely transitioning into a home. We specialize in severe aggression, resource guarding, fear, anxiety, and other complex issues that have made these dogs difficult or unsafe to handle, retire, or rehome.

Affective Canines is based in Richmond, Virginia, but we accept Military Working Dogs, Police K9s, and other working dogs from anywhere in the United States. No matter where a working dog is located, you're welcome to apply for rehab for them. Distance shouldn't stand between a working dog and the retirement they've earned. We'll work with you, your department, and/or organization to figure out transportation and the rehab process.
